Humanities Undergraduate Mentoring Grants

Humanities majors can apply for BYU Humanities Undergraduate Mentoring Grants (HUM Grants) through this site until November 1, 2024 at 10:00 p.m. Read this page carefully and apply below.

Information Sessions will be held the first week of October 2024 in 4010 JFSB.

As part of the college support for experiential learning, HUM grants offer resources for student-initiated, faculty-mentored research projects outside the classroom. Students can apply to the College of Humanities, with a faculty mentor’s endorsement, for up to $1,500 in scholarship funding to support their work.

HUM Grant funded experiences should be high impact learning opportunities in which student and faculty research interests converge. A significant project with substantive mentoring should lead to improvement in core humanities learning outcomes, such as advanced research, writing, and presenting.

Eligibility:

  • Students must be majoring in the College of Humanities and not have received a HUM Grant in the previous cycle (the last six months).
  • Proposed projects must be completable before graduation.
(e.g., If you are graduating in April, you should apply in the previous fall cycle at the latest rather than winter.)
  • Mentors must be full-time faculty in the College of Humanities. Faculty may only mentor up to two projects per cycle.

Students interested in proposing a project should consider the following HUM Grant criteria.

  • Student-initiated
The research should involve a subject of strong personal and intellectual interest. Students with some experience with the subject or research question, in the classroom or other contexts, will provide more compelling narratives of interest in their proposals.
  • Faculty-mentored
Successful projects will depend on a strong student/faculty mentoring relationship. Students should select faculty mentors carefully, based on their prior relationship and relevant field. Faculty mentors must be committed to meeting with their students regularly. Students must be majors in the college and mentors must be full-time faculty in the college.
  • Enabling
The funding request, which will include a project budget, should show how the HUM grant will enable an opportunity (travel to an archive or an academic conference, technology or equipment purchase or rental, time spent, etc.) the student might not otherwise have. Funded projects should stand alone with distinct purpose and outcomes; funding should not simply supplement participation in an existing program such as study abroad.
  • Accountable
The proposed research should have specific outcomes that can be achieved within a manageable timetable. Students and mentors will report on the results at the conclusion of the grant period.

All proposals include the following elements. Use the proposal site linked below to create your proposal. It includes detailed prompts for each component:

  1. A statement of purpose and significance
  2. A detailed description of the research, its scope, and parameters
  3. A statement of expected academic outcomes—the anticipated product of research
  4. A description of the student and faculty mentor’s qualifications for the project
  5. A project timetable and budget
  6. A list of scholarly sources relevant to the research
